🚗 Lease vs Buy

Hidden costs of leasing a car

The monthly payment is the number dealers highlight. These are the ones they don't lead with.

Acquisition fee ($595–$1,095)

Charged upfront at signing — set by the manufacturer's finance arm, not the dealer, so usually non-negotiable. Sometimes rolled into the cap cost.

Disposition fee ($300–$500)

Charged at lease end when you return the car and don't stay with the brand. Easy to forget over 3 years — it's in the contract but easy to miss.

Usually waived if you re-lease or buy from the same brand. Ask about this before returning.

Excess mileage ($0.15–$0.25/mile)

Going 5,000 miles over a 3-year cap at $0.20/mile = $1,000 surprise at return. Buy extra miles upfront if you know you'll exceed the cap — always cheaper than overages.

Early termination ($2,000–$5,000+)

Breaking a lease early is expensive. Unlike a car you own, you can't easily sell a lease. Lease transfer services exist (Swapalease, LeaseTrader) but add friction.
