How does your net worth compare to others in your age group? Data from the Federal Reserve's Survey of Consumer Finances.
| Age group | Median net worth | Mean (average) net worth |
|---|---|---|
| Under 35 | $39,000 | $183,000 |
| 35-44 | $135,000 | $549,000 |
| 45-54 | $247,000 | $975,000 |
| 55-64 | $364,000 | $1,566,000 |
| 65-74 | $410,000 | $1,794,000 |
| 75+ | $335,000 | $1,624,000 |
The mean (average) is heavily skewed by ultra-high-net-worth individuals — billionaires pull the average up dramatically. The median (the middle value) is a more realistic benchmark for most people. If the median is $135,000 for ages 35-44, it means half of that age group has more, half has less.
Home equity accounts for a large share of net worth for most Americans — particularly in the 45-65 age range. Without home equity, liquid investment balances are significantly lower. Retirement accounts (401k, IRA) represent the other major component for people who've been consistently contributing.
